Course Description

This 2-day introductory course is designed for physical and occupational therapists interested in numerous aspects of breast cancer rehabilitation. Emphasis is on understanding the medical management of this unique population and the application of appropriate therapeutic techniques. Evaluation skills and program development for the post-operative, reconstruction, and lymphedema patient will be discussed. An overview of program implementation, including marketing and reimbursement issues, will also be presented.

Cancer fatigue, medical screening and the development of an appropriate exercise program will be covered. The lab will focus on the application of compression bandages for the management of upper extremity lymphedema. Discussion of therapeutic strategies will also be an integral component of the lab.

Course Description

This 4 day course is designed for physical and occupational therapists interested in breast cancer lymphedema management. Days 1 and 2 will emphasize the medical management of breast cancer and the physiologic principles of current available treatment techniques for breast cancer lymphedema. The labs will focus on the application of compression bandages for the management of breast cancer lymphedema, as well as the use of manual lymphatic therapy in reducing edema. Lab will also allow time for discussion of therapeutic strategies.

Days 3 and 4 are designed to teach evaluation skills and program development using a comprehensive approach in the treatment of breast cancer related edema. Emphasis is on learning hand techniques and positioning to effectively perform manual lymphatic therapy sequences for breast cancer lymphedema. Drainage of the abdomen and the breast will also be taught. Please bring appropriate clothing to allow for work on the trunk.
