IN MOTION
A Comprehensive
Program for Breast Cancer Rehabilitation
Physical
rehabilitation is a key component often missing in the treatment of breast cancer.
Many women are surprised by the associated loss of strength and function of the
shoulder and the decrease in their overall fitness level that usually accompanies
breast cancer surgery.
Recovery
In Motion provides the breast cancer patient with a comprehensive rehabilitation
program-before and after surgery. The treatment begins at the initial diagnosis
stage with a pre-surgical assessment and information session. Following surgery,
an individualized and structured fitness program takes the patient through complete
recovery.
The program
is structured in four modules, allowing a woman to participate in those appropriate
for her stage of recovery. Working in consultation with the patient's physician,
the Recovery In Motion program provides the participant with progressive
follow-up care-and the continuing support to resume a healthy life.
MODULE ONE
Pre-Surgical
Assessment
- Collect
baseline information on the pre-surgical function of the arm including range of
motion, strength and girth.
- Perform
a cardiovascular evaluation to determine functional capacity.
- Conduct
a body fat analysis.
- Instruct
the patient in post-surgical range of motion (ROM), resistive and aerobic exercises,
lymphedema precautions, and guidelines for return to daily activities.
MODULE
TWO
Post-Operative
Skilled Therapy
- Obtain
objective values on post-surgical ROM, strength and girth of the involved upper
extremity.
- Provide
manual stretching and soft tissue massage of the shoulder girdle complex.
- Teach stretching
exercises immediately following surgery.
- Conduct
a cardiovascular assessment, when tolerated, to determine a baseline for aerobic
activity.
- Provide
a body fat analysis.
- Monitor
participation in a supervised and progressive exercise program to accelerate healing
and improve functional use of the arm.
MODULE
THREE
Exercise
and Fitness
- Allow the
woman to take an active role in her physical recovery.
- Restore
a sense of control over the physical and emotional wellness of her body and mind.
- Conduct
an initial evaluation to determine baseline shoulder function and fitness level
including: shoulder assessment, body fat analysis, posture and flexibility, cardiovascular
assessment of functional capacity.
- Develop
an individualized program bases on the initial evaluation. Activities include
aerobic training, resistive and flexibility conditioning through the use of free
weights and cross-training on aerobic equipment.
- Re-assess
the patient at the end of a 10-week period to determine changes in body composition,
functional capacity, flexibility and strength.
MODULE
FOUR
Lymphedema
Management
-
Evaluate
and determine the proper course of treatment for this potential and serious consequence
of breast cancer surgery.
-
Manual
lymphatic therapy and compression bandaging of the limb.
-
A
comprehensive fitness program, including flexibility, resistive, and aerobic activities.
-
